The Beatles and Pentax

Ned Bunnell, president of Pentax Imaging USA, posted a photo on his blog of the Beatles' George Harrison playing with a Pentax camera in 1964. Ned goes on to tease that this photo provides clues about upcoming new Pentax DSLR models, including the rumored K-7 which is expected to be announced before the end of May. He talks about the "soul of a camera" as being something that can be felt and appreciated by the photographer.

What does Ned mean by the soul of a camera? A hint can be found in this description of the Pentax SV camera, the one being held by Harrison. It is described as having a marvelous feel, and being an exceedingly pleasant camera to use.

I think this is what Ned meant. The K-7 will have a solid feel that matches the lineup of Pentax Limited lenses. Holding it will feel like the camera is molded to your hand. The controls will be in exactly the right places, with the perfect feel such that they become second nature without ever having to navigate the menus. I feel the K10D comes pretty close with respect to having most commonly used controls accessible without entering the menus, but with a few tweaks it could be perfect. I hope that's what the K-7 is all about. Faster auto-focus would be good too. :)

We will know in a few more weeks.
